Interview with Actress Julie Ann Emery

Actress Julie Ann Emery is best known for her breakout recurring role in "Better Call Saul," AMC's highly buzzed about prequel to "Breaking Bad." She is currently featured as a series regular in AMC's fan favorite, "Preacher." Julie Ann takes on the important role of Lara Featherstone, one of the Grail's best operatives. We got the chance to sit down with Julie to discuss the new season and more.... Enjoy!

1. What can fans expect from your character in season 3 of Preacher?

Julie Ann Emery: We at Preacher live in a spoiler free zone, so I can't tell you much. I can tell you one thing. Featherstone killed Tulip at the end of Season 2. Season 3 she will face consequences for her actions.

2. Were you a fan of the comic before being part of the series?

Julie Ann Emery: I grew up a fantasy and sci fi fan, but we did not have a comic book store in my little hometown, so comic fandom eluded me until I booked Preacher. I am now a massive fan of the Preacher comics, and eager for more graphic novels in my future.

3. What comes naturally, writing, directing or acting?

Julie Ann Emery: Acting is where my original training is based, and I can definitely easily get in the zone or find the pocket in that work. Writing is a little isolating and torturous for me but I like that I can do it, and I have things to say that scratch at me until I get them into a script. Directing is where all of my personality and the way my brain works is valuable. I love that.

4. Which character is closest to the real Julie Ann Emery? Betsy Kettleman or Lara Featherstone?

Julie Ann Emery: Oh God I hope neither. Hmmmmm. If pressed for an answer, Featherstone, minus the assassin part. I, Julie Ann, tend to be organized, I like to work hard, and I enjoy group effort. I can also be obsessive with a task I believe in or am excited about, and that kind of describes Featherstone, minus the diabolical killing part.

5. What was the inspiration behind the film "Then We got Help"?

Julie Ann Emery: We were living in New York, and I wanted to write and direct something utilizing my brilliant actor friends who I thought deserved a spotlight. We had no money and couldn't afford location shooting in NYC, so I wrote something entirely character driven that we could shoot in my living room. My husband and I have also been together since college. We have known a million kinds of couple friends, and seen them through both good and bad times. The fact that we have a sense of humor about our relationship and about life has saved us over and over again. I think Then We Got Help reflects that. I don't think we could get away with Then We Got Help now online. In 2009, digital TV was still the wild west. We couldn't afford great equipment, so I shot it on $150 camcorders from Best Buy and did the editing myself. My husband and I did almost every job ourselves. I always say TWGH is a testament to the adage, "If you have a story to tell, you will find a way to tell it? even if it is on $150 camcorders.

6. Where was your last vacation and why?.

Julie Ann Emery: My husband and I went to Scotland for 2 weeks and hiked The West Highland Way?" 96 miles in 7 days. It begins just north of Glasgow and you hike along Loch Lomond and into the Scottish Highlands. We stayed in little B&Bs in villages along the way. We are big hikers, but this was our first long distance hike. It was grueling, rewarding, cathartic, and stunningly beautiful. I highly recommend it to folks who are so inclined. We love to travel, period, but what we love about hiking is that we get to places most people never see, because you have to go there on foot. Climb the mountain. We also tasted blood pudding for the first time.

7. How often do you eat out

Julie Ann Emery: At least a few times a week, but it depends on how busy we are. We love to sit down to a nice meal, take a breath, and catch up with each other. For the record, New Orleans has the best food of any city I've ever lived in. If you aren't doing a restaurant tour of NOLA while you are there, you aren't doing it right Some favorites include Peche, Herbsaint, Butcher, Domenica, and Delmonico.

8. Do you think AMC has its pulse on everything cutting edge and different?

Julie Ann Emery: I think AMC has the balls to produce things that are cutting edge, different, and niche. It is continually shocking to me that they are an ad-driven network and they make the bold programming moves they make. Massive credit should be given to Charlie Collier and his development execs. No one else would have done Breaking Bad 10 years ago and no one else would have touched Preacher.

9. Would you say men are intimidated by your character in Preacher?

Julie Ann Emery: If they aren't, they should be. Featherstone should not be underestimated.

10. Road trip or Fly?

Julie Ann Emery: Flying is convenient, but I will always choose a road trip. If you've never driven cross country, you are missing out on something special. We have done the cross country trip 7 or 8 times. (I recommend I40 for first timers, it has the best scenery.)
