Conversation with Model Kelly Gervais
Kelly Gervais started her career at age 14 working with designer Manali. Since then she has appeared on Project Runway, Gossip Girl and has walked the runway for many notable brands. I recently sat down with Kelly for a short Q&A.
1. How has modeling change since you first started?
Kelly: Modeling has changed a lot from when I started back in 05. I can remember steady clients I used to work for like Como Girl and Marcia Fields that later on went out of business. Rates changing due to the economy, bookers leaving from one agency to another which forced me to make that switch for better representation. One thing I found that never changed was my support system.
2. What comes more naturally to you? Walking the Runway or posing for photos?
Kelly: Both come very natural to me. I enjoy doing both, but I do prefer runway over posing since Im already photogenic and It's what I do more often. It's more exciting for me to do runway having all eyes on me knowing at that very moment anything can go wrong. I love the adrenaline I get from walking the runway because I own it... not to mention the designer trade is definitely a great perk.
3. Were you the tallest person in your class growing up?
Kelly: In grammar school I was used to being taller then most of the boys. There were other tall girls in my grade so I didn't feel so alone, but by the time I reached high school they finally caught up in height.
4. How was your experience meeting Heidi Klum?
Kelly: My experience meeting Heidi Klum was average. I never got a chance to speak with her on a one on one basis however I found her to be cordial to all of the project runway models. I was fortunate enough to grace the Project Runway these past two seasons at the Lincoln Center and I'm sure she recognized this former model from her show from season 7.
5. Is modeling overseas different than modeling in the U.S?
Kelly: Modeling over seas is different because I feel the competition isn't as Fierce as New York. If you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere that's my motto. I can honestly say I enjoyed my modeling experience in Cape Town, South Africa. Everything over there seemed so relaxed and made my job a whole lot easier.
6. Do you have a favorite Caribbean getaway? why??
Kelly: My favorite Caribbean getaway would be the Bahamas. I normally stay at the Atlantis when I go and I must say that resort is incredibly beautiful. They have a lot of fun activities for you to do and they also have great frozen drinks. I still crave that virgin Pina Colada I get till this day. Did I also forget to mention there crystal blue waters.... Amazing!! I definitely can not wait to go back and soak up the sun.
7. Any advice for those future models out there?
Kelly: Be true to yourself. Set your mind forward to achieve any goal. In this industry you will be dealing with a lot of rejection so you have to be able to take criticism and have a tough skin. Do your research and learn the business! It's easy to get caught up and lost in it so hold your ground and be strong!
